Heather Ianuale is a recruiter for IBM and she recently created some posts that caught my attention. I reached out to Heather and she was more than happy to share these resources with the Chai and Coaching community for your job search. Did you know that NOW is the best time to start looking for an internship or full-time job for the summer of 2023?
You might be thinking...“BUT summer 2022 just ended!”
I know, but this is the time because recruiters and companies are looking to fulfill these positions for next year. This is the opportune time for you to get ahead of the curve and land that job or internship for next summer. Don’t wait until you are 2-3 months out. Get on the ball now. Heather advises that there is a difference between being “proactive in your job search vs. reactive.” Starting the process now will give you time and space to find the job that you’ve always wanted.
“How do I go about getting the role that I want?”
Great question!
And Heather gives us some helpful tips…
1. MAKE SURE YOUR RESUME IS UP TO DATE. You will hear a LOT of different advice when it comes to resumes, but my biggest recommendation is to include things you're proud of, quantify your accomplishments, and highlight your impact in school, work, or projects.
2. NETWORKING IS SO IMPORTANT! Reach out to interns and employees in roles of interest. Connect with alumni. Find out the types of problems they're solving and what gaps exist. Figure out where you can add your unique value. I have learned more about teams and roles from networking than any interview, and it's helped me identify my passions.
3. IF YOU REACH OUT TO A RECRUITER, DON’T INITIALLY ASK FOR TIME. Let them know the job you applied to, the job #, share your resume, and your top 2-3 qualifications. Make it easy for them to advocate for you. We do our best to answer our LinkedIn messages, but the fall is the busiest time of the year!
4. DON’T APPLY TO EVERY JOB THAT EXISTS. Pick those that you're interested in and could see yourself genuinely doing. Don't take yourself out of consideration if you don't meet every qualification, but aim to have at least 60% under your belt.
5. REMEMBER THIS IS A PROCESS. It can be stressful, overwhelming, and tough, especially if rejections start to come in. Take time for yourself. Step away from the job applications. Remember this is a moment in time and not your forever.
The end of summer means that it’s Fall recruiting season. Now is the time to follow these tips from Heather so that when next summer is here, you’ll be in the role that you’ve always wanted.
