9 Tips for Dealing with Homesickness in the US | Chai and Coaching

Moving to the US is exciting, and the first few months often feel like an adventure – exploring new places, meeting people from around the world, and soaking in a different culture. However, after the initial excitement of moving to the US, it's common for homesickness can set in, especially as we approach the festive season. Diwali, in particular, can intensify these feelings, as it’s a time typically spent with loved ones celebrating together.

It’s completely normal to feel this way – moving away from family, friends, and familiar surroundings is a big change. You’re not alone in these feelings, and with the right mindset and actions, it’s possible to ease homesickness, stay connected to loved ones, and even find joy in the new experiences around you. Here are some ideas to help you feel a little closer to home as you settle into your life here.

1. Create Your Own Traditions
While nothing matches celebrating Diwali at home, bringing a touch of your own traditions into your new space with new friends can help you feel less lonely. Share the festival spirit with friends and classmates using some of the ideas I shared in this blog post. Shifting into a position of sharing and teaching others about your culture and what matters to you can be helpful in feeling seen and known by those around you.

2. Stay Connected with Loved Ones
Schedule regular calls with family and friends back home. Setting a specific time for calls creates a routine that helps reduce loneliness and feel connected. Try video calls during family celebrations or simply check in to feel involved in each other’s lives.

3. Build a Support System in the US
Seek out other Indian students or international student clubs on campus that "get it" and connect with them. Joining cultural organizations helps you to meet people who understand what you're experiencing. Talk about your home with them and what you miss. A shared experience can make a big difference in overcoming homesickness.

4. Explore Indian Grocery Stores or Restaurants
Sometimes, the taste of home is all you need. Hop around and try all your local Indian grocery stores or restaurants in your area. Stock up on spices, snacks, or ready-made meals that remind you of home. Some restaurants might even have special menus for Diwali or other holidays, so take advantage of them!

5. Embrace the Winter Season
While a cold winter can be daunting and isolating, especially if it's your first, it also brings new experiences. Try local winter activities like ice skating, sledding, or a friendly snow ball fight, and enjoy the change in seasons. Getting outside and embracing the snow give you a chance to experience something unique to these parts of the US and proactively overcome seasonal depression that may be easier to feel when you're homesick.

6. Find Healthy Distractions
It's easy to feel lonely in a new country. Fill some of your down time with activities that bring joy and fulfillment, like a new hobby, working out, joining an intramural sports club, or exploring your city. These healthy distractions can shift your focus from missing home to discovering new passions and might help you make a new friend or two.

7. Find a Balance Between Staying Busy and Taking Time to Reflect
Staying busy can help with homesickness, but it’s also important to take time to process your feelings. Engage in activities that slow you down, encourage gratitude, and acknowledge your emotions. Honest journaling and focusing on what you’re grateful for can shift your perspective and make the distance from home feel less overwhelming.

8. Don’t Hesitate to Seek Help
Homesickness is a normal part of the adjustment process, and it’s okay to seek help. Many universities offer counseling services on campus where you can talk to professionals who can help you process these emotions with different tools. Sometimes, sharing your thoughts with someone outside your immediate circle can offer fresh perspective and comfort.

9. Plan a Trip Home (Even If It's Far Off)
Knowing you’ll eventually visit home can help ease homesickness. Even if you can’t go home soon, plan for a future trip when possible. Setting a date to look forward to, even if it’s a year away, can help ease the feeling of being disconnected.

Remember, it’s natural to miss home, but you’re also building something valuable in the US. By staying connected with family and friends and creating new routines, you’ll find a balance between embracing your life in the US and cherishing the memories of home.
