How To Get Hired In A Recession

economy employee employers hiring jobs layoffs linkedin network professor recession tech visa Dec 16, 2022

It’s no secret that the economy is not in a good place. Many have lost their jobs, and the unemployment rate is skyrocketing. The tech industry has been hit particularly hard, with major companies like Google, Facebook, and Amazon all announcing layoffs. If you’ve recently been laid off from a tech job, check out this amazing set of resources that my friends at Alcorn put together called - Tech Layoffs - What You Need to Know.

Don’t despair—there are still plenty of opportunities out there.

Here is how you can still get hired even in the midst of a recession...

1. Network, network, network!

Now is the time to reach out to your professional contacts and let them know you’re on the job market. Attend in-person meet-ups, log in to virtual networking events, join relevant LinkedIn groups, and be active on online forums related to your industry. You never know when one of your connections might have a lead on a great opportunity.

2. Get creative with your job search.

If you’re having trouble finding openings in your field, consider widening your search with different roles and companies. While many businesses are laying off, there are so many still who are hiring and looking to bring people on.

Check out these two AMAZING free resources - lists of companies who are actively hiring for various positions - a list of 730 plus employers who are hiring AND a list of 480 plus employers!

3. Don’t be afraid to start from scratch.

If you’ve been laid off from a long-term position, it can be daunting to start your job search from scratch. But don’t let that stop you from applying for entry-level positions or internships—these can often lead to full-time opportunities down the road. And if you’re worried about experience requirements, remember that many employers are now more understanding and willing to train new employees remotely.

4. Keep your chin up!

Job hunting can be tough, especially during a recession and economic uncertainty. It’s important to stay positive and keep your head up during this difficult time. Remember that you are not alone and there are lots of people who are in the same boat as you.

Losing your job can be scary or looking for a job in a market like this can be scary, but don’t give up hope. There are still plenty of opportunities out there—you just need to be connected to the right people. Utilize your network, get creative with your job search, and don’t forget to keep your chin up.

The job market will rebound!
