Making Diwali Special in the US | Chai and Coaching

Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is a time filled with joy, family, and cultural traditions. But when you're far from home, it can also bring feelings of homesickness. While nothing can replace being with loved ones in India, there are plenty of ways to celebrate Diwali in the US and make it just as special. Here is a collection of a few ways you can enjoy the festivities without being present in India this year.

1. Celebrate Diwali in Your Own Way

Being away from home doesn’t mean missing out on the magic of Diwali. Here are some ideas to help you celebrate with just as much spirit:

  • Host a Diwali Party: Invite friends over, both Indian and non-Indian, and share the joy of Diwali. Decorate your space with diyas, rangoli, and fairy lights to create that festive ambiance. Dance in the dark with sparklers and glow sticks in place of firecrackers. Even a small gathering can make the day feel special.

  • Attend Local Events: Many Indian communities across the US host Diwali celebrations such as fairs, dance performances, and temple ceremonies. Participating in these events is a wonderful way to connect with other Indians and enjoy the cultural festivities together.

  • Cook Traditional Dishes: Bring a taste of home to your celebration by preparing some traditional Diwali sweets and snacks. Even if you’re not a culinary expert, you can still have a taste of home with food and desserts from The Cumin Club. Using their ready made meal kits can bring a familiar touch to your celebrations.

2. Share the Spirit of Diwali with Others

Celebrating in the US offers a unique opportunity to share your culture and introduce Diwali to those who may not be familiar with it.

  • Teach Friends About the Festival: Host a "Diwali 101" gathering to share the meaning behind the festival, the story of Lord Rama, and how Diwali is celebrated in different parts of India. It's a great way to engage your friends and make them feel a part of the celebration.

  • Share Traditional Crafts: Introduce friends to making Diwali crafts like paper lanterns or rangoli designs. It’s a fun activity that brings a hands-on experience to learning about the festival.

  • Host a Movie Night: Bollywood has some great movies highlighting Diwali celebrations and Indian culture. Consider showing "Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!" or the SRK classic, "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham."

3. Stay Connected with Family in India

While you may be miles away from home, there are still ways to feel close to your family during Diwali.

  • Virtual Celebrations: Schedule a video call with family during their Diwali festivities. Whether it’s performing a virtual pooja together or simply chatting while they light the diyas, it’s a wonderful way to feel connected.

  • Send Diwali Gifts Back Home: Consider sending gifts to your family in India, such as sweets, festive clothes, or personalized items. It's a great way to show you’re thinking of them, even from afar.

  • Share Photos and Videos: Exchange photos or short videos of your Diwali celebrations with your family to create a sense of shared experience. It’s a simple gesture that can make the distance feel smaller.

Diwali may be different when celebrated in the US, but it's an opportunity to embrace the traditions in a new way and bring a piece of home wherever you go. Remember, the essence of Diwali lies in spreading light, joy, and positivity – values that transcend borders.
