Navigating Your Internship Journey ➡️ Insights from Priya’s Experience
Oct 03, 2024The internship search can often feel overwhelming, especially for anyone new to the United States. In a recent video posted to my YouTube channel, I had to opportunity to sit down with Priyadharshini Rajmohan, a fellow international student, who successfully landed her internship with the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. Priya arrived in the U.S. in the fall of 2023 and began her internship job search in December 2023, later than most other students.
Initially overwhelmed and hesitant because of her "fresher" status, she recognized the need to take proactive steps to enhance her employability and has graciously shared her experience and insights to help you navigate this process, as well.
Here are some key strategies she employed that can guide your own search:
- Optimize Your Resume and LinkedIn Profile
Priya started her job search by refining her resume and optimizing her LinkedIn profile. This digital presence is crucial in today’s job market and is the gold standard that employers consider when vetting candidates. When editing your LinkedIn profile, highlight your skills and experiences effectively and consider using tools that can help you build a standout resume. - Leverage University Resources
Harrisburg University provided Priya with various free professional development opportunities, including career fairs, resume writing workshops, and networking events. Don't underestimate the value of these resources; they are designed to help you succeed. Participate actively and network with professionals in your field. - Networking is Key
During her networking efforts, Priya met a representative from her desired company at a career fair. This connection proved invaluable when she later applied for the internship and connected directly with the CEO on LinkedIn stating her desire to work under him in his company, which later led to an invitation to interview with the company. Building relationships within your industry can open doors you never thought possible. - Prepare for the Interview
Priya spent time before her interview researching and learning about the company and the people in the company that she would be interviewing with prior to the interview. This proved to be valuable as she came across prepared, knowledgable, and personable in her interview and allowed her to engage in meaningful conversations, demonstrating her genuine interest in the role and not only her technical skills. - Follow-Up After Interviews
After her interview, Priya took the initiative to send a thank you note to the interviewer. This small gesture made a positive impression and showcased her professionalism, which can set you apart from other candidates.
Priya's experience also highlighted that while technical skills are important, soft skills—such as communication and interpersonal skills—play a crucial role in the interview process. Employers in the U.S. often look for candidates who can connect with them on a personal level. Be prepared to share your story and experiences, allowing your personality to shine through during interviews.
Once Priya secured her internship, she was involved in a hands-on IT experience which was instrumental in her professional growth. To hear more details about Priya's internship role and responsibilities, check out our full conversation here.

Your journey may have its ups and downs, but remember that every step is a learning opportunity. Don't hesitate to seek help, whether from peers, mentors, or university resources.
